Donor Advised Funds (DAFs)

What is a DAF?

A donor advised fund, or DAF, is like a charitable investment account. DAFs allow donors to contribute funds, receive an immediate tax deduction, invest those funds for tax-free growth, and then recommend grants to charities over time.

How It Works

Step 1

Open a DAF with a community foundation, financial services firm or other sponsoring organization. Some DAFs require a minimum contribution to open an account.

Step 2

Name a successor to continue to recommend grants after your lifetime, or you can name a charity as a beneficiary to receive all or part of your account.

Step 3

Make contributions to your fund at any time. In addition to cash, other types of assets like securities and real estate are also commonly accepted and are not subject to capital gains tax when donated to a DAF.

Step 4

Qualify for a charitable tax deduction for each gift you make to your DAF. Contributions are invested tax-free by the sponsoring organization until you are ready to give. Many sponsors provide a portfolio of investment options for you to choose from.

Step 5

Make recommendations to your DAF sponsor that various amounts be distributed to charitable organizations of your choice, such as The Cradle.

Step 6

Donations distributed from DAFs (but not donations to DAFs) may be eligible for employer gift matching.
