What is Options Counseling?

Options counseling
Options counseling helps expectant parents explore the possibilities for their unplanned pregnancy. Learn about how options counseling works.

What is Options Counseling

A positive pregnancy test can be overwhelming, especially when the pregnancy is unplanned. Options counseling helps support expectant parents as they navigate decisions about their pregnancy.

Options counseling is named for its focus on possibilities, not one particular choice. At The Cradle, our counselors will not pressure you into choosing adoption. They are here to provide guidance and education, not direction. They can help you explore plans for parenting, adoption, assistance from relatives, a temporary care plan and more.

Our counselors can also connect you with valuable resources based on your decisions. For instance, if you choose to pursue an adoption plan, they will walk you through the whole process and introduce you to the types of families who are ready to welcome a child. If you choose to parent, they can help you access resources to prepare and support you for this new chapter.

Your options counselor is your advocate and committed to empowering you to make the best decisions for yourself and your child, now and in the future.

How Does Options Counseling Work

Options counseling does not look the same for everyone. Counselors can accommodate your unique needs, such as meeting you in a convenient and comfortable location. A support person, such as a relative or a friend, is also welcome to attend these meetings.

Your counselor will guide you through your decision-making process in a way that considers more than just the present moment. They can help you envision what the next week, month, year and even decade might look like based on the choices you make today. If you’re feeling overwhelmed or afraid of what the future may hold, your counselor is there to support you in making a thoughtful long-term decision.

They are also equipped to assist with feelings of grief or loss that may arise in this process. They can provide tips for self-care during what can be a stressful and emotional time.

How to Get Started

You can connect with a counselor at any point during your pregnancy, and even after your child is born. This process is more than a one-time conversation — it’s a journey. A counselor can walk alongside you throughout your pregnancy and beyond, helping you make the right decision for you and your child.

At The Cradle, all services for expectant parents are free. If you are pregnant and need help figuring out your options, visit our Pregnancy Support page or call our 24-hour toll-free number to speak to a Cradle counselor: 800-272-3534.
