From early on in our relationship, we started a motto of "Our Little Red Canoe" to help us navigate life and its challenges. Seven years ago, we agreed to climb into this little red canoe and start paddling. It won't always be easy but that's when we lean on each other and bear the work of moving the canoe.

Even though we are more than excited to start our family through adoption, we also recognize that this is an unknown and difficult journey for you. Thank you for getting to know us a little better.

Katy is a quiet thinker who loves animals and is lucky enough to work with them as a job. When she is home she enjoys science fiction, a wide variety of good music, and reading while curled up with the dogs. Katy’s family is now in Seattle and we love to visit once or twice a year there, and they travel here once or twice a year, too. As a child, Katy loved to travel and is looking forward to sharing that journey with our children: the magic of maps, looking up fun places and then seeing where the journey takes you. And who doesn’t love a nice hotel with a swimming pool???

Lori is a registered nurse who takes pride in taking care of her patients as if they were her own family. When not at work, Lori can often be found outside getting dirty in the garden or on her bike running errands or “just being in the city.” While really good at managing a home, a trip or a project, Lori’s favorite thing to do is see where the day takes her. Making friends with neighbors and asking locals for advice on where to go and what to see make for really wonderful adventures! Always willing to try new things and to listen to another’s story make her very happy.

Together, we balance each other out pretty well.

Openness and Diversity:

We look forward to figuring out what works best for you and for us. We want your child to know where he or she came from, where they got their hands or their smile. We are not able to say what that will look like without knowing you, your wants or your needs. We are open to many options like emails, letters, photos, social media pages, and/or visits.  We feel that is best figured out together and want to work with you so that you are recognized in our home.

Both Katy and Lori have friends and family that have either been adopted or have blended families. We have discovered that there is no such thing as too many people to love a child. It truly does take a village.

At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if our child looks like us, just that our child knows that this family loves all sorts of people from all sorts of places and that there is room for looking different and speaking different and feeling different and still being in the same family.

As you will see throughout our photos, we have members in our family/friends circle with mixed-race families and being open to this possibility for our own family was not really a question. We have a support system to go to when we have important questions ranging from hair and skin care to how do we teach our child how to thrive in this society? We are proud of who we are, as individuals and as a couple, and intend to instill that confidence in our children. We are ready to explore new avenues to make that happen.

We live in a diverse community where people from all walks of life interact and share experiences everyday. The people in our lives are nothing alike and each have their own stories and experiences to share with your child to help them grow into an independent, respectful, and thoughtful person.
