Jeffery & Matthew

Hello! We are Jeffery and Matthew Long, and we’re truly excited to have you take a look into our world to get to know us better. Be warned….there are a LOT of pictures in our family section from so many incredible moments in our life. Some photos need absolutely no explanation, while others require us to get together so that we can share them with you. We can guarantee that some of these tales will have you laughing so hard that we’ll all need a Starbucks latte in hand to recover.

We have spent 14 incredible years building a life together; a life that is fully embodied by this quote from Walt Disney. We seek to fill our days with laughter, let the pure joy of our friendship fuel our imaginations, and love so relentlessly that it guides how passionately we dream for the future. Our dream is to expand our family, to open our hearts to a child who can share in all of our happiest moments. We appreciate you giving us the chance to tell you how important this opportunity is to our family.

Our Story

It was the summer of 2004, and our mutual friend, Brett, kept telling us that we should meet.  After a few weeks of Brett’s insistence, we finally decided that a meeting at The Gap on Michigan Avenue (where Brett worked) would be our first encounter.  We had a connection immediately, and promised to keep in touch (that day Jeffery nervously bought a gold metallic shirt that read, “Where There’s Smoke There’s Fire”, we still have that shirt and laugh every time we see it).  A few months went by, and we finally had our first date.  We met for lunch at Joy’s Noodles in Chicago.  We sat at that table in Joy’s for hours, talking, laughing, and getting to know each other.  This first date turned into many more, and we have been together for 14 years.  When we got engaged our entire family ate at Joy’s Noodles, and after our first adoption meeting at The Cradle we celebrated with Joy’s famous spring rolls. We are best friends, we balance each other, and we continue to have a lot of fun!

First Date Memory (From Matthew): Jeffery had remembered that I loved to read, and brought me one of his favorite books as a gift on our first date.  It was such a thoughtful gesture, and it gave me an early peek into what sort of person he was.

First Date Memory (From Jeffery): We ordered edamame (soybeans in a green pod and you only eat the beans inside the pod) from the restaurant. When the waiter sat them on the table Matthew’s eyes got wide. I told him that I LOVED edamame and he said reluctantly, “I do too!”, when he picked up his first bean he put the whole thing in his mouth and began chewing, and chewing, and CHEWING…I just stared at him and started laughing. He had actually never had edamame and was eating it wrong (trying to impress me). He laughed and said, “I tried!” We laughed for a long time and I knew then that he would always make my life a bit more silly.

They say opposites attract and with Matthew and I this statement couldn’t be more true. We are the opposite in almost every way. Let me paint the picture:  Matthew LOVES sports and going to live sporting events across the country… I have absolutely NO idea what’s going on half the time but I love seeing him scream with excitement when the ball goes where its supposed to go (see I really have no clue LOL).  Matthew is adventurous, loves cars, road trips, and his ideal vacation is traveling or camping with friends and family… a complete departure from my love of spas and shopping. We have had so much fun together exploring the world and I have loved being by his side learning how to kayak and hike.

As my Grandma would say, “That boy can cook” and “puts his foot in that pot.”  You absolutely have to try his award winning chili.

Quiet and confident, I am always impressed when Matthew walks into a room. He is incredibly self-aware and always seems to know what what matters most. As a manager for a major technology company, his coworkers praise his leadership and call him a mentor.  Kind and wise, Matthew inspires me to be a better person, challenges me to love often, and is genuinely passionate about supporting everything that I do.

An amazing big brother, loving uncle, and devoted son, Matthew is always the first person to make someone in our family  laugh. Our nieces and nephews call him uncle KiKi and for good reason; he lights up a room with his funny impressions and adorable high pitched laugh. When he uses baby talk to talk to our dog Sophie I just smile. Matthew is the Yin to my Yang and he brings so much joy and balance to my life.

There are certain people in this world who can simply walk into a room, and immediately bring a light and positive energy to the space.  Jeffery is one of those people.  From the first moment that I saw him, before we even spoke, I knew that he was special.  His smile is big, and his heart is even bigger. Jeffery has a capacity to love that I truly admire.

Jeffery is a dreamer, and truly believes that anything is possible.  He is the first one to say, “Yes, we can do that!”  He has inspired me to be more open to the possibilities of life, to be more spontaneous, and to be more present in the moment.

None of this is more evident, then when I see Jeffery interacting with children.  He becomes more of himself when he is surrounded by kids.  He has devoted a large part of his life to teaching, inspiring, and mentoring young people.  Through the past almost 14 years that I have known Jeffery, he has chosen to spend a lot of his free time teaching, coaching, and challenging young people to be more creative and expressive.  Whether it be through teaching art, dance, or music, the light on Jeffery’s face when he sees a kid “get it” or make a connection to something bigger than themselves, is undeniable.  He has also impacted many lives through his career choice as a Director at a local Non-Profit Organization, where he continues to inspire young adults everyday.

Jeffery’s love for his family is also undeniable.  He has an incredibly strong connection to his parents, sister, and nieces/nephews.  Spending time with them is always where he would prefer to be.  His sister is definitely his best friend, and their relationship has even inspired me to become even closer with my own sisters.  He has taught me to love harder, and love deeper.

I cannot wait to see Jeffery is the role of a father.  He is already an amazing uncle, husband, brother, and son…adding father to that list is only going to make all of us better.

Family is the most important thing to us. When we recall the happiest moments in our life, they all involve our family. Our relationship with our family is something we learn to treasure more and more everyday.

Our family is VERY diverse. A cultural melting pot of people from different backgrounds and with different beliefs. They bring out the absolute best in us by challenging us to love harder and to always make the world a better place.

Our Mothers are our foundation/North Star. Providing us with the strength and compassion to be better men. Our Fathers are gracious and full of life. Our sisters are our rocks. They know us better than anyone else in this world and they keep us grounded. We laugh for hours when we are with them and they always have a way to keep it REAL. Jeffery’s brother in law is DeAndre is our biggest ally; always supporting our choices. Our Nieces and Nephews light up our lives and bring us so much joy.

Family is not all linked by blood. Our friends are loving extensions to our family tree.

An open adoption is important to us because we want our child to know the story of their life. Their family, where they came from, their history is a essential to the story of who they are.

This journey in life started with you, their birth parents, and we would be honored to be a part of that journey.  We will always be open to including you, at a level in which you are most comfortable.

We promise to include you in every step of this child’s life. You get a front row seat to the 1st grade musical, as many texts and selfies as your data plan can handle, and as many finger paintings as you can hang on your fridge.  We also promise there will always be a steady supply of photographs, stories, cards, and artwork to share if you are ready.

We look forward to nurturing this relationship. To work together, with you, to ensure that our child has the best, most fulfilling life possible.  We are open, and our child will know that you love them.

We won’t have all the answers, but we are open to exploring this world with you. We are family and this is a lifelong process. We also recognize that this journey is not easy for you…We respect whatever relationship you feel comfortable having with us. We will always be here and our arms will always be open.

We are madly in love with each other, and have a strong desire to share that love with a child, and with you.

Thank you for taking the time to read our profile, and we are humbled that you have considered us.

We may be two dads, but you will ALWAYS be mom.

"One thing you should know, no matter where I go, we'll always be together."

-Christopher Robin
